The order

How it was put together

Everything that goes on a plate of waakye, and what each one stands for.

  1. The rice

    Where they grew up

Two streets apart in Sakasaka. Same school, same madrasa, same tro-tro stop. Fourteen years of not noticing.

  2. The beans

    The first meeting

Properly, at his cousin's naming ceremony in 2022. She was serving. He went back for thirds he did not want.

  3. The shito

    The argument

About whether Tamale waakye beats Accra waakye. It does. He conceded in writing. She kept the note.

  4. The egg

    The proposal

At her mother's kitchen table, with both mothers pretending not to listen from the next room.

  5. The gari

    The families

On top of everything, holding it together. The Mahamas and the Fuseinis have been one street for a long time.
