Departures

Jeremy & Nana Akua

A wedding people fly in for is a week, not a day. Here is all of it, on the board: tap any row for that day's running order. Travel notes are underneath, because no other wedding site will tell you about the yellow fever card.

      Words

      Fanny Crosby, 1873

1Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!O what a foretaste of glory divine!Heir of salvation, purchase of God,Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This is my story, this is my song,Praising my Saviour all the day long; This is my story, this is my song,Praising my Saviour all the day long.

2Perfect submission, perfect delight,Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;Angels descending bring from aboveEchoes of mercy, whispers of love.

3Perfect submission, all is at rest;I in my Saviour am happy and blest,Watching and waiting, looking above,Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

      Refrain after every verse.

      Words

      Fanny Crosby, 1875

1To God be the glory, great things He hath done;So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,And opened the life gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear His voice!Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,And give Him the glory, great things He hath done.

2O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,To every believer the promise of God;The vilest offender who truly believes,That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

3Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;But purer, and higher, and greater will beOur wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

      Refrain after every verse.

Before you fly

The part most wedding sites leave out. If you are coming from abroad, read this one before you book anything.

  • Visa

    • Most passports need a visa to enter Ghana, arranged before you fly. Ghanaian passport holders and ECOWAS nationals do not.
    • Apply well before December — the Christmas rush is real, and the mission gets busy from October.
    • If you hold a Ghana Card, bring it as well as your passport.
  • Yellow fever card

    • A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Ghana, and it is checked on arrival. No card, no entry — this one is not negotiable.
    • The vaccine needs about ten days to take effect, so book it a few weeks out.
    • Keep the yellow card with your passport, not in your hold luggage.
  • Airport pickups

    • Send your flight number and landing time to the protocol team and someone will meet you at the barrier in Terminal 3 with a sign.
    • Pickups run all day on Monday 28 December and through the week for later flights.
    • If your flight moves, message the number on your confirmation rather than waiting — Accra traffic means the driver leaves on a schedule.
  • Harmattan

    • Late December into January is harmattan: dry, dusty and hazy, with the sun a soft disc. Days are hot, around 31 degrees.
    • Evenings drop enough to want a light layer, and the dust is hard on contact lenses and chests — bring drops, an inhaler if you use one, and lip balm.
    • Your skin will be drier than you expect. So will the church.
  • Plugs, money and SIMs

    • Ghana uses the same three-pin plugs as the UK at 230 volts, so London guests need no adapter at all.
    • The currency is the cedi. Cards work in hotels and the bigger restaurants; keep cash for the beach, the boat and the market.
    • A local SIM at the airport is cheap and worth it for data and for MoMo.

The kerb at Terminal 3, where someone will be waiting.
A hazy Accra afternoon in harmattan: a pale ochre sky, the sun a soft disc, dusty palms over low rooftops.
Harmattan light, which is what December looks like here.

Gifts by MoMo

These are Ghanaian mobile money numbers, so they work from a Ghanaian phone or a Ghanaian bank. From abroad, send through any remittance service that pays out to MTN MoMo or Telecel Cash in Ghana — the number below is the one to send to. Or simply bring it with you.
